We know losing weight isn’t easy, but to make it easier it’s best to set weight loss goals. To set your goals, you could try using the SMART method. It’s a great and effective way to stay motivated and reach for success.

Here’s all you need to know about using the SMART method to set your weight loss goals and how to stay accountable and motivated.

How to set my weight loss goals

hen setting your weight loss goals, try using the SMART method, which stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound.

When setting a weight loss goal, it’s best to be specific. Don’t just say you’re trying to lose weight. Instead consider goals such as a number of pounds you would feel healthier losing, or how many days you want to stick to your new healthy eating regime.

Making your goals measurable will help keep you on track as you will know when you’re closer to achieving it.

Any goal you set should be achievable, or you may be setting yourself up for failure. Try breaking up your weight loss goal into smaller chunks that are more achievable.

This is how you plan to achieve your goal, including the measures you will be putting in place to help. Remember, you don’t have to change everything at once, it’s better to work towards smaller changes that you can keep in the long-term.

You should set a time frame for achieving your goal, but remember to make it realistic to give yourself the best chance of achieving it.

Accountability and staying motivated

Another part of successful goal setting is being accountable, making sure you are responsible for achieving your own goals.

There are a couple of ways you can do this:

  • When you establish your goal, write it down and keep it somewhere you can see it as a visible reminder. You might find it helpful to tell your friends and family that you’re trying to lose weight.
  • Getting support from other people can help boost your willpower.
  • Make a list of the reasons you’re trying to lose weight and what the benefits will be. This can help when you need a bit of a boost.

Keep track of your progress

There are plenty of ways you can keep track of your weight loss, healthy eating and exercise. It’s important to find a way that suits you.

Top tip: keeping a food diary and writing down everything you eat, and ensuring you’re honest about it, can help with weight loss*. You could keep a written log of what you’ve eaten during the day, and how much exercise you’ve done. Or there are plenty of apps out there that can help.

Enjoy healthy food

If you find new healthier foods that you enjoy, it could make it easier to help stick to your new healthy eating regime. Try to eat more fruit and veg, as they are great sources of vitamins, minerals and fibre to help you maintain a healthy gut. Here’s our advice on the basics of healthy eating, and where you can find new recipes to try.

Get fit and exercise

As well as changing your diet, increasing your activity levels can help you lose weight as well as reduce your risk of some health conditions.  It’s important to find an exercise you enjoy, as you’re more likely to stick to it. Here’s our guide on ways to start exercising for weight loss.
