What is Canesten cream used for?
Canesten cream is for the treatment of thrush in both women and men. It relieves irritation externally caused by thrush, but it can’t treat the internal (vaginal) cause of the infection. Available in creams, tablets and pessaries, as well as combi packs, Canesten can be bought over the counter at your local pharmacy, supermarket or online.
If you think you’re experiencing thrush for the first time you should visit your doctor. They’ll be able to check your symptoms and give you the right diagnosis, that way if you have thrush again in the future, you’ll be able to recognise the symptoms. Once you know what the symptoms of thrush are you can buy products like Canesten to treat yourself at home.
Can men use Canesten thrush cream?
Men can also get thrush and thrush treatment for men can include clotrimazole based creams such as Canesten cream and oral capsules containing fluconazole. Canesten cream for men and Canesten duo can used to help calm in the itch and clear the infection.
If the first instance doesn’t clear you can pass thrush back and forth to your sexual partner, so it’s important that you take the medication and directed. You can also speak to a Pharmacist in store for more advice and treatment options.
Are there any side effects of Canesten cream?

Possible side effects of Canesten include but are not limited to:
- Swallowing or breathing difficulties

How long does Canesten cream take to work?
Your doctor will advise you on how long to use the cream, if you are using the cream at home you should follow the instructions included in the pack. Usually for women, the cream should be applied to the skin around the entrance of your vagina 2-3 times a day until symptoms disappear. If your symptoms have not cleared up within seven days of finishing the treatment, then you should see your doctor.
If you’re treating a male sexual partner the cream should be applied to the end of the penis 2 or 3 times a day for up to two weeks.
How do I know if the Canesten pessary is working?
Thrush symptoms should disappear within three days of using the pessary, however if you are still experiencing symptoms after seven days see your doctor. When using the pessary, you may notice a white chalky residue in your underwear, this pessary discharge is normal and doesn’t mean the treatment isn’t working. You may want to use a panty liner when the pessary is being used. The pessary will dissolve in your vagina, however if you notice pieces of undissolved pessary in your underwear then talk to your doctor or a pharmacist, as the thrush treatment may not have worked properly.
